Sailing is a sport alive and well on Philippine shores. The shores of San Juan, Batangas burst with life as the first-ever Seafront Oz Goose Regatta kicked off the festivities at the annual Seafront Summerfest. Recently, winners of the highly anticipated sailing competition were announced.
Hosted by Aboitiz Land’s Seafront Residences, the most sought-after residential development in the area, this annual event offers a variety of activities for beach lovers and sports enthusiasts.
Celebrating triumphs and teamwork at the 1st Seafront Oz Goose Tournament
The 1st Seafront Oz Goose Tournament, featuring sailors from diverse backgrounds and various clubs including Subic Sailing, Puerto Galera Yacht Club, Albay Yacht Club, and Taal Yacht Club, showcased an action-packed weekend competition.
Seventeen boats vied for victory in the races held amidst the scenic backdrop of the Seafront Residences. Competitors faced calm winds in the morning but toughened up against stronger winds in the afternoon, showing resilience and skill throughout the races. As the tournament unfolded, division winners emerged, each celebrating their remarkable achievements.
Championing inclusion and diversity, in the Women’s Division, Ginny Waite, Cherry Pinpin, a renowned paralympic sailor, and Jazmine Lucero secured the 3rd, 2nd, and 1st runner-up positions respectively, showcasing their prowess and finesse on the water.
Meanwhile, in the Sailability Division, Joy Calimlim Habana and Cherrie Pinpin demonstrated exceptional skill, clinching the 2nd and 1st runner-up spots.
Finally, in the highly competitive Open Division, Michael Storer, Mark Jhervin Alumisin, and Jazmine Lucero, along with their respective crews, emerged as the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd runner-up, displaying remarkable teamwork and sailing expertise in a fiercely contested category.
Here’s a fun fact! The Oz Goose is a small sailing dinghy designed by Australian naval architect Michael Storer. It is a simple, versatile, and affordable boat primarily intended for amateur boat builders and sailors. The design emphasizes ease of construction and sailing enjoyment, making it popular among beginners and experienced sailors alike. The Oz Goose is known for its stability, maneuverability, and suitability for various sailing conditions, making it a favorite among recreational sailors, sailing schools, and community sailing programs. This boat embodies sustainability through its construction from natural materials, primarily wood, and its reliance on wind power instead of fuel.
The tournament celebrated the spirit of sailing and highlighted the camaraderie and sportsmanship shared among participants from diverse sailing backgrounds.
Summer sports to look forward at Seafront Residences
Subic Sailing also hosted a beginner-friendly sailing class. Participants were introduced to sailing basics, covering boat anatomy, wind detection, and navigation controls. They experienced hands-on learning aboard the Oz Goose, alternating between a 10-minute dry training session and a 30-minute practical session at sea.
The residents of Seafront Residences were the first to eagerly embrace sailing lessons, leading the way as they ventured onto the water. Whether taking the helm or observing the instructor’s expert guidance, they navigated the tranquil waters to refine their skills. This initial experience sparked enthusiasm for sailing and left them eagerly anticipating future maritime adventures, perfectly reflecting the adventurous and lifestyle-oriented spirit of Seafront Residences.
Seafront Summerfest is just getting started. After the sailing competition, the upcoming Beach Volleyball Republic event on April 13 steals the spotlight.
Among the lineup are notable collegiate squads from UAAP and NCAA, alongside independently run teams like the Army Lady Troopers, Philippine Air Force, and the Philippine Navy. Watch for the exhibition game led by Beach Volleyball Republic founders Dzi Gervacio, Fille Cainglet-Cayetano and Bea Tan.
Since 2017, Seafront Residences has been a steadfast supporter of beach volleyball, fostering the sport’s growth within the community. Over the years, these teams have cultivated their respective beach volleyball programs, enhancing their skills and deepening their connection to the game. In the spirit of giving back, Beach Volleyball Republic will also host a beach volleyball clinic for children 10 years old and up.
