On a recent sunny day at Green Lake, with nearby trees still waiting to bloom, a single coot floats by two brand-new docks. At the edge of the water, a team of construction workers nears the finish line on the 10,800-square-foot Green Lake Community Boathouse.
A balcony is going up, roll-up doors are going in and landscaping around a drainage area is commencing. Racks inside, to hold watercraft, are already up. The estimated $12.5 million for the entire Green Lake Small Craft Center redevelopment is funded by multiple sources, including private donations and grants, and has a spring completion target, according to a Seattle Parks and Recreation webpage.
New wheelchair ramps are already installed between the boathouse and the renovated and reopened bathrooms. A long row of portable toilets is gone. Pavers with names and tributes from donors are in place as visitors approach the new docks.
