Indian shippies vital to global trade, but it’s not always smooth sailing

For young Indians, a seafarer’s life comes with the promise of money, adventure, but their own vessel can become a floating prison.

The 21 Indian seafarers who saved hundreds of lives with a timely SOS call after their cargo ship, MV Dali, collided with a Baltimore bridge last month are still stuck in the ship with no definite timeline for their rescue yet. A bridge collision may be unusual but being trapped at sea happens far more often than we think.
While a job in a commercial vessel comes with the promise of good money and adventure for Indian seafarers, that same ship can turn into a floating prison.
