The first program of the summer has set sail on a wonderful 14-day adventure. The five students arrived to the dock at Hodges Creek Marina with smiling faces and unpacked their things onto their monohull named Nosy Be. They had a wonderful dinner of chicken, rice, veggies, and coleslaw. Plus, it was Will’s birthday so the crew made a cake for him!
After a restful night under the stars, the students and their Captain and Mates (Abby, Cat, and Mikey) had a quick orientation with our founder Mike. At the beginning of every program, there is a “Mike Talk” where he shares a bit of the history of Sail Caribbean and the BVI, talks about the hardworking staff and all of the effort they have put into planning the programs, and about the core values of leadership and independence (to name a few) that they will gain on the program. Then, they were all set to get underway!
Chloe was the Skipper of the Day so the Captian Abby showed her how to check the engines and drive the boat out of the Marina. They headed South to Norman Island for the night and had a lovely hike to the helipad to watch the sunset! Also, they saw a few sea turtles swimming around their boat!
The next day, they set off for Hodges Creek Marina again to pick up a Colgate 26. The Colgates are our smaller keel boats that students get their ASA certifications on and they are great tools to learn the sailing basics. After rigging it with the sails, the crew set off for Cooper Island just across the channel. Tonight, they are going to be having burrito bowls for dinner and get a good night of sleep, because tomorrow they will go diving!
