The Delta crew has been busy to say the least! In the last three days, we have sailed 100+ nautical miles, hiked 300+ foot hikes, and consumed an impressive amount of burrito bowls, pita pockets, quesadillas, and scrambled eggs. Not to forget all the late night laughs and hammock talks! Our crews are taking in and immersing themselves in all that they can and we as staff couldn’t be more proud.
The Delta fleet set sail from the North Sound on Virgin Gorda in the late afternoon on Friday, June 30, starting their first overnight sail of the program! Campers rotated through night shift roles and practiced their navigation skills by plotting positions and courses on charts, as well as checking in with the other boat via VHF radio throughout the night. The voyage lasted around 23 hours, as the crews made landfall in Marigot Bay, St. Martin around 4 PM on July 1. After a successful overnight sail, the two boats were excited to go ashore. We all had a nice sit-down dinner at a restaurant called Le Main A La Pate. After dinner, everyone headed back to boats for a good nights’ rest after the overnight passage.
In the morning of July 2, the Deltas left for Ile Fourche, an uninhabited island off the coast of St. Barths, just a few miles SE of St. Martin. The sail there went beautifully, and we even reached 9.4 knots of speed! There was not a cloud in the sky, crews were all smiles. Having everyone hone in on their big-boat sailing skills is so fun to watch as a counselor!
At Ile Fourche, we picked up a mooring ball for the night and everyone headed ashore for an evening hike. The views were stunning and everyone was relieved to stretch their legs. Afterwards, crews made dinner and deep cleaned boats before the next days’ cleaning inspections.
On Monday, July 3, the staff woke up early and let the campers enjoy a bit of a sleep-in. We motored the short way over to St. Barths where we docked. Campers were eager to have a chill morning before we hopped ashore. Everyone took car tours across the quaint French island, enjoyed local cuisine, and shopped around Gustavia, the main port. St. Barths is very lush and green this time of year, the views were spectacular!
