Follow Our Journey: Delta 2s, Day 3

Written by Lilly S., Mate/Social Media Coordinator

Good morning from Cooper Island. There is a beautiful morning light on the calm water and it’s a gorgeous scene to wake up to. The kids on Delta are now all together! On Polygala, we finally got to meet our 9th crew member: Carlie! Carlie had a delay in flights, but was able to eventually join us here at Cooper last night (July 18). Yesterday we were up to lots of things! We left Hodges Creek Marina, our home base, and got to raise the mainsail for the first time with our new crew on S/Y Polygala and S/Y Aegnor. We tacked around the Sir Francis Drake Channel for a bit before heading to the mooring field here at Cooper. Staff went over a few good starter lessons, such as de-docking and sail-raising lessons. The kids caught on quick, both returning and new campers alike. Everyone worked together well and was excited to be out on the water.

Once we got settled at Cooper, students had a chance to chill and rest after a hectic few days. After a bit of downtime, they participated in water sports and also got to take out the Colgate 26s! A lot of our students that choose to do the Delta program are here to also get their ASA certifications and we as staff are more than happy to help facilitate that best we can. Stay tuned for that!

Later in the day we did our first ‘ocean shower’ of the program and staff gave students the Sail Caribbean ‘shower demo’ where we spritz mustard, ketchup, and any other condiment within reach on a selected staff member, and they demonstrate how to properly clean all of that off using salt water and just a little bit of fresh water. Since fresh water is limited, we like to teach conservation in all that we do.

After a fun shower party with music, students got dinner ready. We had some yummy burritos and sat around the dinner table talking and laughing together. We also had our second boat meeting and talked about our roses, buds, and thorns of the day, did a few name games to bring everyone up to speed, and had some tea before bed time (decaf, of course!). Stay tuned for a Delta trip update later this evening!
