The main sail flickered red in the light of our night-vision headlamps as the boat pitched and rolled in the dark. The bow light turned the geysers shooting up on either side of the bow after a particularly large swell of electric blue before the water crashed down into the cockpit, re-soaking the harnesses and jack lines that kept us from slipping overboard.
When not on a 3-hour shift amusing each other with a little mild, tired delirium, we’d either slept strapped in on the deck or in one of the cabins. It rained off and on throughout the night, and our navigation skills improved significantly as we carefully compensated for changing winds and high swells.
The early morning brought calmer weather, and a piercing sunrise radiated through the thunderheads. Flying fish skipped in the water around us as albatrosses and birds drifted quietly overhead. A large fleet of dolphins traveled with us, putting on a delightful show.
After 26 hours, a lot of Dramamine, some sea shanties, and a few packages of gummy sharks, Nosy Be moored safely outside Marigot, followed by Polygala. During the night, Polygala found a rip in their jib sail! They handled it very well and got a new sail in Saint Martin. We shuttled to shore for a welcome dinner of escargot, steak, and pizza. We are so happy to be in the Leewards!
