The fleet woke up early and enjoyed a breakfast buffet- a choice of cereal, granola, and yogurt. Shortly after they completed their pre-departure checks to make sure their boats were safe and ready for the day’s sailing. They dropped the mooring ball at Bitter End and had a smooth four-hour sail through the shallow, turquoise waters to the island of Anegada.
After picking up mooring balls in their field, the crews cooled off with a quick swim before taking a dinghy ashore and trucking to Big Bamboo, a local cafe, for some ice cream and a browse of the gift shop! Next, they took part in a “Human Impacts” lesson from our Marine Bio coordinators where they discussed various threats the oceans face- from plastic pollution to harmful sunscreens.
After this, each boat took part in a beach cleaning competition and managed to fill multiple trash bags with a variety of litter that would have otherwise found their way into the ocean! Before heading back to boats, the groups took a truck tour to a local shark and flamingo nursery- where they saw each of these amazing animals in their natural habitats. Once back on board, crews prepared a delicious meal of spaghetti bolognese!
Next, it was time for the crews to decide who their skipper, mate, and navigator would be for challenge day- which will take place tomorrow. Finally, it was time to finish the day with a PM boat meeting before unwinding with a quiet night on board, and some Taylor Swift playing of course!
