Hello from the Bitter End Yacht Club on the North Sound of Virgin Gorda! We sailed from Village Cay Marina on Tortola to BEYC yesterday, July 22. Sailing conditions were superb, and students worked on their sail-raising strength and channeled their knowledge into figuring out points of sail and navigation to successfully get us here. It is also Christmas in July, a popular summer holiday down here in the tropics, so the BVIs are hopping with fishing boats, power boats, and sail boats enjoying the sunshine.
Once we picked up mooring balls here at the Bitter End, we immediately jumped in the water! It’s been very hot down here, and it was nice to cool off before heading ashore for land activities. We played on the beach, enjoyed tropical smoothies, and had a nice sit-down dinner together. Staff and students on Delta are buzzing about our overnight sail which we are departing for later this afternoon (July 23). We as staff are very excited to show our campers around the Leeward Islands. At boat meeting, we answered all questions about what an overnight sail consists of, what students should be ready for, and all the safety precautions that are put in place to make it a successful passage. This morning, we took the Hobie Cats out for a quick morning sail.
We will be heading to St. Martin, a half-dutch and half-french owned island in the Dutch and French West Indies. Stay tuned for more to come, and get excited to see down island content in just a couple days!
