Hello from the Leeward Islands! We’ve had dodgy service the past few days, but have been to some awesome places and seen breathtaking sights since we last updated. We spent our last few moments in St. Barths going to beaches, snorkeling, shopping around and we had a nice dinner in town on our last night.
After we left St. Barths, we completed a 6-hour sail over to St. Kitts, where we got to go on car tours around the lush, green volcanic island and learn about St. Kitts’ history. We got to explore the jungle and appreciate local culture and arts. We also wandered through the Brimstone Hill Fortress, which is a historical landmark and national park in St. Kitts and Nevis. Campers were able to run around and enjoy some free time exploring the fort for themselves with some of their fellow buddies. Brimstone Hill Fortress is a UNESCO World Heritage site and is seen as one of the best-preserved historical fortifications in the Americas.
We also met Percy, who founded Sail Caribbean with Mike Liese back in the late 70s! Percy was our driver and our tour guide all in one. It was a pleasure to spend time with him.
After we finished at the forts, we got to see more of the island via car tours. There was a point where we could see both the Atlantic Ocean and the Caribbean Sea at the same time! We ended up grabbing lunch at Shipwreck Beach, at a beachside restaurant. Campers also had the opportunity to get their hair braided! All in all, our time in St. Kitts was lovely and we are so happy we got to sail here.
For breakfast on the morning of July 7, we made fluffy pancakes and prepared for a short sail over to St. Eustatius (Statia) where we will complete a hike on the Quill, the name of the dormant volcano on Statia.
The kids are also studying for their ASA exams and exhibiting all their newfound knowledge and skills! We are very excited for them.
